All Year 5 and 6 pupils enjoyed a morning with the Shrewsbury School Sports department having a go at Rowing, Fives and honing their Cricket skills.
Pupils learnt basic rowing techniques on both the ergs (indoor rowing machines) and also in Shrewsbury School’s impressive indoor rowing tank. Ellie’s gasp of pure excitement reflected the surprise when the pupils realised that they were going to have ago in a real boat, using real oars. Timing as a quad proved quite tricky for many but great to try.
Eton Fives was next on the list and pupils enjoyed learning the many rules of the game. Some of the Year 6 boys seemed to enjoy the fact that if you could not agree who won a point, you get to replay the point with a ‘let.’ Mr Barnard and Mr Whitney proved great teachers and by the end of the sessions, all pupils were able to play points and maintain a rally.
The Cricket session with Mr Shantry, Miss Jones and Mr Holder helped to teach and develop the front foot drive, bowling technique and to much excitement of the children, diving catches. Throwing one’s body across the air and landing on a crash mat was a highlight for many!
