January 2025 – An Education Full of Wonder

We have chosen the Big Tree to scaffold our Mission, Values and Learning Attributes as part of our Packwood Strategic Plan 2030. It is a cherished beech tree, standing proudly in the centre of our beautiful, rural site. It represents childhood and growth. Childhood, after all, has to be an age of discovery and growth. These days are remembered for life, and it must never be allowed to become the age of anxiety.

The health of Big Tree comes from the strength of its roots: soaring performance, adventure and character underpin our approach to nurturing wisdom. The trunk, robust enough not to be blown off course by storms, represents our three values – tenacity, respect and humility. A Packwoodian has both an impressive inner cohesion and balance, and ability to go confidently into unfamiliar situations. The branches, all inter-woven together for the children to climb and move nimbly between, represent the fun of childhood and the skills and attributes developed through self-mastery and discovery.

In 2003, the author John Mortimer, wrote about the need for children to roam freely. He said, “children should, of course, always be heard, but they may need not always be seen. Let’s hope that they are up a tree somewhere, engaged in life affirming skills that have nothing to do with the job market”
