The Owl and the Pussy-cat went to sea,
In a beautiful pea-green boat,
They took some honey, and plenty of money, Wrapped up in a five-pound note.
The Owl looked up to the stars above … And sang
[Poem by Edward Lear]
The Journey On expedition was designed to challenge our pupils to use and develop their valuable life skills through an adventurous journey. For every senior pupil, it marks an end to their time at Packwood and a new beginning at the senior school of their choice. The physical and mental challenge aims to build confidence, teamwork, and leadership skills, as well as develop a strong sense of belonging and achievement. The expedition is the key summative component of the Packwood Award, our award-winning outdoor education, adventure and experiential learning programme, designed for young leaders.
The programme includes sleeping under canvas, training in first aid, water skills & rookie life guarding, camp craft, hill walking, map reading & orienteering, road safety, mountain biking, camp fire & trangia use, nutrition & cooking, tent pitching & management, knot tying, bird watching, trees & bush-crafts, and open river canoeing.
The 2025 ‘Journey On’ saw 42 rugged explorers traverse the Shropshire hills following the rivers Perry and Severn between Packwood and Shrewsbury Schools. Every step and every paddle stroke was pupil led.
No honey or five pound notes, but plenty of pea green boats, singing at stars and of course serious fun, delivering on our promise of ‘An Education Full of Wonder’.
