A group of boarders spent a thought-provoking Sunday afternoon visiting The Dana, Shrewsbury Prison. The group were welcomed by Malcom, the prison guard / tour guide. He had many fascinating first-hand stories of working in prisons. He shared historical facts and stories that stretched through the centuries since the prison had been built. We stood in the pillory, sat in the prison van and experienced a cell in the dark.
This brought about an interesting and lively TPR discussion on the topic, “do prisons work?”. It also provided an opportunity to discuss Victorian times and how thieves were treated.
The tour of the Dana also included a tour of the buildings and facilities that have featured in recent television shows – a fascinating afternoon for all involved.
