Children gathered round a historical map

Bosworth History Trip – written by Luc (Year 5)

On Tuesday 3rd June, Year 5 went to Bosworth for a History trip. First, we went to a little museum full of armour, swords and other weapons. There were two helmets which you could put your head in, and we could see people charging at you, just like in the battle. It was very exhilarating and my favourite attraction of the day. There were also videos of people dressed up telling you about their experience of the battle such as a little girl saying that when Henry-ap-Tudor came back, he was covered in blood. There was also a barber surgeon who talked about getting arrows out of the soldiers’ bodies. It was a bit gruesome.

Afterwards, we followed a guide, and we got to carry flags and wooden swords. He took us down the hill where there was a little well, from which, according to a legend, King Richard III drank from before the battle.

After an amazing packed lunch (thank you Packwood kitchens), we went to a marquee with daggers, longbows, halberds and swords and the guide told us all about them and then he took us outside and we picked up fake weapons and did military training, preparing us for the battle. Then he showed us how quickly and accurately a longbow could be used.

I really enjoyed the day because we learned lots of new things and were able to experience life in mediaeval times, it was good fun.
