Pupils exploring a racecourse

Maths Trip to Ludlow Racecourse

Despite the cold and blustery weather, nothing dampened the excitement of Form 6 as they headed to Ludlow Racecourse for a maths-themed day. The pupils were warmly welcomed by two representatives from the Racing to School organisation, who provided education packs and even invited pupils to try on Racing Silks – a definite highlight to start the day.

The children were soon immersed in a series of hands-on tasks designed to bring classroom learning to life. In the Weighing Room, they explored how weights and measures are used in racing and learned how handicapping affects each race. They then moved on to the parade ring, tape measures in hand, to calculate its size. A close-up look at the fences was followed by great excitement as the children took part in their very own half-furlong foot race along the course.

After lunch, pupils learned how to read a racecard before heading to watch the action unfold. Form 6 were also invited to judge the Best Turned Out horse for one of the races, a responsibility they took very seriously.

The day offered a wonderful blend of learning and fun. A special mention goes to Henry, who took on the role of reporter, interviewing trainers, jockeys and racecourse staff with confidence and curiosity.

This trip provided a fantastic opportunity for pupils to see how the maths they learn in school is applied in the real world.
