As part of our newly launched Form 8 leadership framework, at the start of the autumn term, 34 of our Form 8 pupils, accompanied by four staff, travelled to the stunning coastline of Rhoscolyn in Anglesey for our inaugural Leadership Retreat. Staying in a simple bunk house and surrounded by breathtaking sea views, the group embraced two days of challenge, reflection and teamwork.
The retreat was inspired by the leadership of Sir Ernest Shackleton, whose legendary Antarctic expeditions continue to exemplify our own school values of tenacity, respect and humility.
Interspersed by cooked meals by our own Mrs Hughes and Mrs Parry, the group assembled as one group and in smaller break-out sessions in our yurt seminar space. Here pupils explored themes drawn from Shackleton’s life – decisive leadership, keeping morale high and, crucially, supporting every member of the team.
On Tuesday afternoon the learning went outdoors into the vast open spaces of rugged Wales. Pupils navigated orienteering challenges along the coastline and collaborated on a raft-rescue exercise designed to test problem-solving, communication and trust – echoing the teamwork and ingenuity that kept Shackleton’s crew safe. Evenings brought time for journaling and fireside reflections, linking the day’s activities to their own leadership journey.
This retreat offered Form 8 a memorable launch to the year, blending Shackleton’s enduring lessons with adventure and reflection. They returned to Packwood with stronger friendships, greater confidence and a renewed sense of purpose – ready to lead in the year ahead.
