Sir Philip Sidney Essay Competition

This half term, some of our Form 5 and 6 pupils have been enthusiastically getting stuck in to Shrewsbury School’s Sir Philip Sidney Essay competition, with this year’s title being particularly topical and thought-provoking: “Why should we care about nature and wildlife?”

In the first half of the Autumn Term, Form 5 were exploring the beautiful poetry of The Lost Words, which celebrates the forgotten language of the natural world. Inspired by its themes, pupils have now been encouraged to research more about the importance of conservation and our interdependence with wildlife and nature. Alongside this, in class we have been starting to look at essential essay writing skills, learning how to structure arguments effectively, as well as working collaboratively to discuss and debate this important issue. Some children have decided to take the opportunity to do some independent research over the holidays, and we look forward to seeing the amazing work they produce, ahead of the competition deadline in January.
