Our programme of careers talks began in January with our first speaker, Lewis Hardie from StartTech. StartTech is an award‑winning company that provides cyber security support for businesses. Lewis spoke to the children about his own career journey, explaining that he did not begin his working life in IT. He shared the wide range of opportunities available within the technology sector, linking it to many of the areas of life that the children are already familiar with. The children were eager to ask questions and learn more.
Our second speaker was Packwood parent, Ben Nimmo. Ben was introduced as an entrepreneur within the IT industry, specialising in programming. He offered the children a completely different perspective on tech careers, discussing his passion for programming and the varied roles it has led him to, from web design and social media work to creating innovative software. A particular favourite among the pupils was hearing how Ben developed a programme capable of weighing pigs using only a photograph.
Ben also spoke honestly about the subjects he enjoyed at school, those he didn’t, and the importance of failure as a valuable part of learning. He emphasised the importance of working hard, being determined and finding out what you enjoy doing. His message resonated strongly with the children, and his storytelling made a memorable impact.
We look forward to welcoming several more speakers over the next two terms, each bringing their own experiences and insights to help inspire our pupils as they begin thinking about their future careers.
