A teacher and children dressed up as medieval characters in a vibrant classroom

Turrets and Tiaras – Acorns Theme Day

Last week, Acorns children arrived at school dressed as princesses, kings, and brave knights, ready to enjoy a special ‘Turrets and Tiaras’ theme day. During the morning, they took on three exciting tasks: designing coats of arms to discover how families once used symbols to represent themselves; creating “stained glass windows” with coloured paper to brighten the classroom; and using construction toys to build towers, turrets, and drawbridges, imagining life inside a real castle.

Later, in the Forest School area, the children searched for picture and word pairs hidden among the trees, linking medieval images and vocabulary. The day concluded with stories of royal adventures and courageous knights—a joyful celebration of imagination, teamwork, and curiosity that encompassed our Big Idea; ‘Castles are magical places filled with real history and fairy tales. By exploring turrets and tiaras we can learn how people really lived long ago while enjoying the magical tales that bring castles to life.’
