Year 3 Academic Update

Year 3 have made a fantastic start to the Spring Term. In English, they have been analysing the author’s use of language in the ‘Witch’s Song’, By Roald Dahl. Some children used thesauruses to find synonyms for ‘spooky verbs’, whilst others used dictionaries to find the definition of challenging verbs like quivered and huddled. This led onto exploring rhyming couplets and writing their own ‘spooky poems’.

In Maths, they have been using a range of strategies for multiplying and dividing 2-digit and 3-digit numbers by a 1-digit number. Year 3 often use concrete materials, such as Base Ten and counters, then record pictorially and using part-whole models, before recording formally in columns.
