Following an impressive flurry of essay writing from our Form 5 and 6 pupils, five talented Packwoodians were selected as finalists in the Sir Philip Sidney Essay Competition, hosted at Shrewsbury School.
This year’s thought-provoking title, “Why should we care about nature and wildlife?”, inspired reflective, passionate and deeply considered responses. With more than 150 entries submitted by prep schools across the country, reaching the final was a significant accomplishment and a testament to the quality of writing produced by our pupils.
The finalists were invited to attend a special event at Shrewsbury School, where they took part in a hands-on environmental workshop. Armed with hammers and nails, they assembled a brood frame for a beehive while learning about the remarkable lives of bees and the essential role they play in sustaining our ecosystems. The afternoon continued with a collaborative session exploring the interconnectedness of ecosystems and how changes in one area can have far-reaching consequences elsewhere in the natural world.
The event concluded with delicious cakes and the awards ceremony – a fitting end to an inspiring and celebratory day.
We are immensely proud of all the pupils who worked so diligently to craft and submit their essays. Congratulations to our five finalists, and special congratulations to Skye, who achieved Runner-Up in the Year 5 category – a superb and well-deserved accomplishment.
