Form 5 enjoyed a fascinating and enriching visit to the Derby Open Centre as part of their Theology, Philosophy and Religion (TPR) studies.
The day began with a warm welcome from Sabina, who guided our pupils through the high street to the Hindu Mandir. Along the way, they observed sari boutiques, jewellery shops and specialist food stores, gaining an insight into the local Hindu community. Arriving in time for the Arti ceremony, pupils experienced a memorable display of worship involving bells, candles, incense, water and singing.
The group then visited a local Mosque, where they were welcomed by Sam, and were able to view a children’s Ka’ba installation that had been created for a forthcoming performance.
After lunch back at the Open Centre, the pupils took part in an interactive workshop exploring Hindu wedding traditions. They learned traditional dances, tried on wedding attire and discovered more about the customs and organisation of Asian weddings. The session also prompted thoughtful discussion around the themes of love, respect and the distinction between arranged and forced marriages.
The visit brought classroom learning to life, giving pupils the opportunity to experience different faiths and culture firsthand. Throughout the day, they demonstrated great curiosity, respect and maturity, asking insightful questions and engaging enthusiastically with each activity.
