On Friday 20th September we held a fun run and fundraising day for the Veterans’ Unit at the Orthopaedic Hospital in Gobowen. During their Assembly, the children heard all about the Orthopaedic Institute and the work of the Veterans’ Unit. They were able to see examples of the replacement knees and hips that are used in operations. The event had been inspired by Adam Haythorn, our Head Groundsman, who has run marathons and ultra marathons in aid of the Orthopaedic Institute, and his wife, Laura, who works at the Institute. The idea for the Fun Run came from Adam’s passion for running.
Children, staff and many parents dressed up in the theme of a movie character. They ranged from sharks, dinosaurs and Minions to Arthur Dent and Manny in Ice Age. We had a number of witches and were visited by The Men in Black and the Pink Ladies from Grease. The serious part of the day started at 2pm with the Acorns Fun Run, followed by the Junior and Senior School races. Sports Leaders from Year 7 and Year 8, along with Adam Haythorn and a number of willing parents, guided and supported the children along their routes. They were rewarded with a goody bag from the Orthopaedic Institute.
The children participated in numerous highly entertaining activities, including Guess the Teacher from their baby photograph. There was also an inflatable obstacle course to tackle, as well as a gladiator challenge and bouncy castle and slide. Many thanks go to the catering team who laid on a magnificent afternoon tea and to Hoof and Scoop who came along and provided delicious ice creams. Huge thanks to all involved in supporting the event and helping to raise funds for the Orthopaedic Hospital.
